Why Stay Hands-On as a Tech Leader in 2025?
The traditional image of a tech leader often involves someone who’s “graduated” from coding—someone who’s moved beyond the keyboard to focus purely on strategy, meetings, and high-level decision making. But in 2025, this approach isn’t just outdated; it’s counterproductive.
Make Nemawashi part of your design process
Getting consensus on design decisions is one of the most challenging aspects of any technical or creative project. Too often, teams find themselves caught between two extremes: the chaotic free-for-all of design by committee, or the risky isolation of the lone wolf making decisions in a vacuum. But there’s a third way—one that comes from Japanese business philosophy and can revolutionize how we approach collaborative work.

Adding Audio to Hugo
The website you are reading was generated using Hugo. I recently upgraded the version of Hugo up quite a few releases.
Overall everything went smooth, but something I didn’t catch till the next day was all my audio embeds stopped working. The embedded html5 audio tag in the post or page was being ommited. It was getting rendered as an html comment, “raw HTML omitted.”
Introducing CMSutil, GraphQL backups
At work I selected GraphCMS to be our preferred headless CMS. It is already leveraged on multiple projects and has been working out well for us. The beauty of a good headless CMS is you can use in many scenarios. Case in point, of the 3 instances we have, 2 are web apps; only one is marketing site.

Cobra is a library and generation tool for creating command line interfaces. It simplifies the work needed to create a good CLI. It is written in Go and is used in quite a few well know open source projects. Docker, Kubernetes, Etcd and the GitHub CLI all use Cobra. Check out this link for a larger list of projects.

Golang Food
Golang is a hot topic among developers these days. languages like Golang and node.js are getting a lot of attention.
For most folks switching programing languages is a big deal and it usually takes some production catastrophe or poorly aging codebase to motivate the switch. It’s like when someone has that way too special night with tequila and decides “never again.” For others they switch and/or experiment with other languages like they change their socks.
Scaling Your Business with Technology
I recently moderated a panel called Scaling your business with technology at Silicon Beach Fest.
I want to thank all the panelists for coming and giving the crowd their tech insights. We had a good discussion across a breadth of issues, from stacks, to clouds to testing and product iterations. I would also like to thank all the folks who came to watch the panel and ask questions.
Erdiko is moving to the Slim Framework
After a few years of developing Erdiko I have learned a few things about what it does well and what other frameworks do better. The PHP language has also changed dramatically since I started Erdiko in 2012. This has lead to a coming to jesus moment where it was clear it’s time for a new architecture.
Working with headless WordPress
A few months back I wrote about headless WordPress on the Arroyo Labs blog, http://blog.arroyolabs.com/2016/02/headless-wordpress-a-primer/
Since then I have made a bunch of improvements to the package on github. Take a look and let me know what you think. We’ll continue to make improvements to the code to make working with WordPress that much easier. https://github.com/ArroyoLabs/erdiko-wordpress

Review: Scaling MongoDB by Kristina Chodorow
I am new to MongoDB but this book has been helpful in evaluating and learning about how to scale with it. At work we’ve been thinking about using it for some projects but it was important to investigate and review it in more detail before we jumped into it and added it to our stack. Overall, it’s a great book on Mongo scaling, succinct and complete. It doesn’t elaborate on every possible scaling topic, but it’s enough detail to make important architectural decisions. Mongo is a great new technology, and this book is a good companion. For more info on using mongo in general, check out “MongoDB: The Definitive Guide.”
Good to be back!
If you came to this site in the last month or two you might have noticed some weird things happening. You look at a post and then you are redirected to some random site trying to sell you something. Turns out I got hit by a hacker targeting WordPress on Media Temple. Almost 1/4 of all WordPress blogs on my host got hacked..lucky me! If you are running WordPress don’t forget to keep up with security updates and keep your server perms in check. I haven’t posted on johnarroyo.com for months because of work, but that also meant I hadn’t properly updated my WordPress installation in a while either.

A few days ago an apple employee gets drunk and forgets his phone at the bar. It’s not just any phone though, it’s the next generation iPhone not to be out for months. Given how secretive Apple is, I’m sure this person is in a world of hurt right now. I was kind of surprised when I saw the story on Gizmodo a few days ago, but was even more surprised when I saw it in the NY Times this morning. Someone is going to be getting a serious spanking from Steve Jobs.

As google seeks to dominate all things digital, it gets one step closer. This time with language translation. It’s actually quite impressive to see the results. I read this article from the NY Times and was pleasantly surprised.

Do you want to smell like a man?
Ok, I think I have seen everything now. There is a new cologne called Bacon, which of course smells like fried pork flesh. http://www.fargginay.com/shop-1.html
I was at Sephora the other day with my girlfriend and I didn’t find any on their shelves. They could be missing out on a goldmine 🙂
Do you miss the smell of bacon in your car?
I ran across this bacon air freshener today. Get your fix of fatty goodness when you are on your commute to work. Forget about the trees, try out some bacon! http://www.mcphee.com/shop/products/bacon-air-freshener.html
Bacon Vodka?
Wow I was just turned on to this new liquor, Bacon Vodka! I haven’t seen it yet, or tasted it, but I’m on the lookout. It’s a company based out of Seattle who started making it for their bar. Now they’ve packaged it up and have been growing. I’m not a huge fan of bloody marys but a bloody bacon mary sounds pretty tasty. Are any bars in California selling bacon cocktails?
The Fabulous Bacone
A tasty treat found by This is Why You’re Fat. It’s cone made of bacon filled with scrambled eggs and gravy with a biscuit on top. Yum, More bacon to put pounds on you.

The Amazing Bacaritto
This is another heartattack bacon dish. It is part bacon, part burrito, & part cholesterol. I don’t know who created it, but it looks pretty fucking ridiculously tasty. If someone knows who created this please comment or email me. Thanks for the pic Coffelt!
The Bacon Explosion Erupts
This is quite possibly the most amazing bacon dish I have ever seen. This is the state of it before it cooked. You have to have to see the original post to get a sense of the bacon goodness. This post is a bit off topic, but this blog isn’t exactly focused 😉

Programming Python by Mark Lutz
Python is a great language for writing scripts that can be easily ran on servers or for writing web and desktop apps. This book helps guide you through the syntax and coding style that make up a python app. It’s definitely one of the more flexible and easy to use modern languages.
Review: The Art of Community By Jono Bacon
One more day left in the O’Reilly blogger review program. This time I have been looking at The Art of Community by Jono Bacon.
Overall it’s a great book for a foundation in community building and growing social websites. It’s filled with lots of good advice and common sense. My main complaint is I wish there were more stories. You can’t always expect the author to be authoritative on every topic, as a reader you want more anecdotes and support for why you should take the authors advice. It may not be a good fit for seasoned community managers, but it’s a great volume for programmers, project managers and young community managers. It’s well worth a read.
Review of Native Video in HTML5
I just recently took this video for a spin and posted my review on the O’Reilly site, Native Video in HTML5
Overall I gave it 4 stars. Check out the review:

Lightbright on Steroids
This came out in a Japan last year, but I just ran across it this week. It’s called the Luminodot by Bandai. It’s like an HD lightbright. It has twice the resolution and much brighter than the original. I wonder when kids in the US will get to play with this pixelated beast.

Vinyl continues to die
Allthough the use and popularity of vinyl is holding, the underlying infrastructure for pressing and distributing it is dying. Vinyl pressing quality varies greatly these days and the know how of running vinyl production machines is diminishing, not to mention good mastering services for vinyl aren’t always easy to find. Bottom line, more vinyl distributors are filing for bankruptcy. This is a deadly blow to vinyl, especially dance music vinyl.
Old School Deuche
This is a wierd video I ran across on youtube…Talk about some old school Fraternity Hijinx. Southern charm mixed with some deuche = volital mix. I think the obnoxious comments on the youtube page are just as entertaining as the video!
Von Deuchebag

This powerful beast can kill a man with clogged arteries in 10 minutes. The whole story is here, http://www.thisisfreakingridiculous.com/tifr/2009/4/13/ba-k-47.html
The Bacon Explosion Erupts
This is quite possibly the most amazing bacon dish I have ever seen. This is the state of it before it cooked. You have to have to see the original post to get a sense of the bacon goodness. This post is a bit off topic, but this blog isn’t exactly focused 😉
MBRP 101, the future of DJ’n
This is a great spoof of all the hot new dj gear coming out, I guess it’s also just a spoof of gear reviews in general. Regardless, it made me crack up.
Sexual Seduction
This is a new video from snoop dogg, “Sexual Seduction”. The term sexual seduction is pretty retarded if you think about it, but the video is brilliant! It’s worth checking out. Watch the video here (embeding is disabled). The video below is Zapp & Roger Troutman, the talkbox inspiration for snoop’s new track. Thanks Coffelt for the links.
Old School Deuche
This is a wierd video I ran across on youtube…Talk about some old school Fraternity Hijinx. Southern charm mixed with some deuche = volital mix. I think the obnoxious comments on the youtube page are just as entertaining as the video!
Von Deuchebag
This is one of the funnier blogs I’ve come across in a while. It pretty much is exactly what the title describes, it features hot girls with cheesball dudes. If you want to know what it is like to live in New Jersey, check out this site. I can’t give Jersey too much shit though, because the Deuche epidemic is all over, it knows no boundaries.

Free Ninja Tour mp3s
The Nine Inch Nails / Janes Addiction tour has put some free mp3s and even wav files up for DRM free download. There are a couple of tracks by the Street Sweepers as well. I don’t know there music, but their tracks on the site are pretty cool.
Air Attack, the collaoration
This Saturday we’re premiering our latest work called Air Attack. It’s a collaboration between Stephanie Sleeper (Choreography) and John Arroyo (Composition).
It’s a show of Modern Dance and Electro-Acoustic Music. It’s also the first time the full program is of works that we’ve collaborated on. We even have a special improv in the works, it’s going to be a cool show!
Red Pepper Sessions feat. Electrocab
Come out to Laila Lounge this Friday Night for live music and djs. We have Electrocab and Molly Thompson playing live sets and Beverly Chills, KMF, and Brian Shelton spinning some tight beats afterwards.

Deuchebag of the Month Award
I was on facebook today and saw a get money now ad. Out of curiosity I clicked on it. It brought me to some get rich quick scheme which was pretty entertaining. The best part was seeing this pic of him with his Ferrari and then the text underneath it.
What a grouch!
Oscar the grouch!, originally uploaded by jarroyo.
Someone came as oscar the grouch…what a rockstar! He was runner up to the big chief. Maybe the crowd was just being PC.

Some Imaginative Lego Work
This Times article is great, some very clever ghetto representations of life in the city using Legos.

Thanks for link Bedirhan(solo)
Picture Mashups, the Sleeveface
This a cool new site that has people contribute their pictures of themselves with an album cover. The trick is to get the album cover to become a part of your real world scene and snap a photo. It’s a great realworld mashup of sorts. http://www.sleeveface.com/
Brewery Art Walk LA
The Art Walk was yesterday in LA at an old brewery converted to studios and gallery. There was some pretty cool art there. Some of my favorites were Jam, Lana Gomez, Kaleb Higgins, Holly Hood and Christine Caldwell
Derivative Noise
This is another version of the #4, 7 min version previously posted. It’s recorded at monkeytown in brooklyn.

John Arroyo Noise Performance
This is a minimalist tuntablism performance I did back in November, it’s all about the noise baby!
